How to Host a Last-Minute New Year’s Eve Party While Sick in Bed

As an event planner and entertainer, I’ve orchestrated everything from elaborate travel events to corporate galas. But this New Year’s Eve, I faced a different kind of challenge—planning a party from my sickbed! When my kids casually mentioned their friends were coming over to celebrate, I had less than 24 hours to pull off a memorable evening. With some creativity, a little help from DoorDash and Amazon Prime, and a willingness to improvise, we made it happen.

The Setup: Groceries, Décor, and a Wheel of Fun:

From my bed, I quickly DoorDashed party snacks and drinks and ordered some last-minute New Year’s Eve decorations on Amazon Prime. To keep the teenagers entertained, I planned a series of activities to run every hour on the hour, guided by a spinning wheel of activities (yes, a literal wheel they spun to determine the next event!).

Hourly Activities to Keep the Party Rolling:

The beauty of these activities was their simplicity and adaptability. Here are some of the highlights:

  1. Square Dancing with a Twist
Using painter’s tape, I created squares on the floor. Blindfolded participants had to stay in their squares while music played. The last one standing in their square won a prize (candy bags for the win!).

  2. Scratch-Off Lottery Tickets
A spin landing on green meant it was time to test their luck with scratch-off tickets. Easy to set up, fun to play, and no cleanup required!

  3. New Year’s Eve Scattergories
A themed round of Scattergories got everyone laughing and competing to outwit their friends.

  4. Resolution Guessing Game
Everyone wrote down their New Year’s resolutions anonymously. We read them aloud and tried to guess whose was whose—perfect for some heartfelt and hilarious moments.

  5. The Bow Scoop Challenge
Blindfolded players used a spatula to scoop as many Christmas bows as possible into a bowl within a set time. It was a riot!

  6. Vacation Destination Voting
Each guest wrote down their dream vacation spot within North America, South America, or the Caribbean. We passed the bow around, and the final pick determined our summer family vacation: the Outer Banks, North Carolina. Stay tuned for those vacation pics!

Décor and Food: Simple but Festive:

Given the last-minute nature, I kept things minimal but fun. Flowers, balloons, and a few party hats set the festive tone. For food, we went with easy-to-eat snacks and finger foods, letting the kids enjoy a relaxed vibe.

The Takeaway:

This experience proved that even with minimal prep, you can create a memorable and engaging event. It’s all about being resourceful, leaning into the fun, and embracing imperfection. While I wouldn’t recommend planning a party from your sickbed regularly, this New Year’s Eve will be one to remember.
